POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER
position, starting at 1.1.2024 in University of Oulu, Finland. Successful applicants will belong to the strategic Biocenter Oulu spearhead project headed by the professors Lauri Eklund and Vesa Kiviniemi providing highly complementary expertise in endothelial cell and molecular biology, advanced microscopic imaging, disease modeling, clinical neuroimaging, and brain clearance therapy research.
SUBJECT FIELD: Brain is metabolically highly active organ and requires an efficient system to remove the resulting waste, while failures in the clearance can cause Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The mechanisms which regulate waste clearance are incompletely understood.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Work will be carried out in the research group headed by Professor Lauri Eklund (at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu) focusing on vascular biology and metabolic waste clearance mechanisms in the central nervous system. In this project we investigate roles of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the brain clearance and pre-clinically test potential treatments to enhance brain clearance functionality. Research technologies mainly used are biochemical and cell biological methods, advanced microscopy, and genetic mouse models.
REQUIREMENTS: To successfully occupy the position, the candidate must possess a doctoral degree in the field of medical biochemistry, molecular/cell biology, or medicine and have expertise in the ECM and vascular biology. Prior experience in generation and analysis of gene-modified mice (knockout/knockin and cell-type specific inducible models); in biochemical, histological and advanced microscopic imaging methods; and knowledge in transcriptomic analysis are required. The ability to pursue independent research, supervise younger scientists, teaching experience and fluency in written and spoken English are expected. Priority is given to the applicant who can start on January 1st, 2024.
