We are now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to work for the research project Developmental and Situational Dynamics of Students’ Math Anxiety and Performance (iFeelMath), funded by the Academy of Finland. This 3-year position is open at the Research unit Teachers, Teaching and Educational Communities at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, starting from 01.08.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the project

In the iFeelMath project, we investigate the developmental and situational dynamics of math anxiety and math performance among primary-school students. Further, to prevent the possible negative consequences of math anxiety, we develop and test the effectiveness of different types of interventions to support students with math anxiety. This Postdoctoral Researcher position is targeted especially to the intervention part of the project. Depending on your research interests, you will also have a possibility to contribute to the other parts of the project, as those are intertwined. 

About the job

As a postdoctoral researcher your main responsibilities include

  • handling and analyzing data from the intervention study with advanced statistical methods 
  • planning and writing articles as a first and co-author, upon agreement, together with the members of the research team
  • disseminating the findings (e.g., in conferences, social media)
  • engaging with the research team and international collaborators to work towards understanding individual differences in math anxiety and math performance, and ways to mitigate students' math anxiety

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • A doctoral degree in Special Education, Education, Psychology, Educational Psychology or in a related subject. The doctoral degree must have been received no more than 10 years ago.
  • A proven track record of publications suitable to the area of the project
  • Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written, which are needed to work on this project
  • Excellent skills in quantitative methods and using statistical programs such as SPSS, Jamovi, R and/or MPlus.

We also appreciate

  • Experience in and knowledge about intervention research, development of mathematical skills, math anxiety, and pedagogical support
  • Previous experience in research project work

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years as of 01.08.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
