Faculty of Technology, Chemical Process Engineering

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to join our Industrial Water Research Group in Chemical Process Engineering, Faculty of Technology in the University of Oulu. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based in the project “Combined Ion Exchange-Reduction Process for the Elimination of Fluorinated Contaminants in Waters” (https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/combined-ion-exchange-reduction-process-elimination-fluorinated-contaminants-waters), funded by the Academy of Finland. The project will focus on the combination of ion exchange/desorption and reductive UV/sulfite degradation for PFAS elimination in contaminated waters. The project advances our understanding of ion exchange and desorption behaviour of PFAS and their substitutes on anion exchange resins as well as their degradation efficiencies in complex water matrices. The study is also expected to provide novel insights into PFAS degradation mechanisms. The project is led by Prof. Tiina Leiviskä.

About the job

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will investigate the concentration and UV/sulfite degradation of long- and short-chain PFAS and their substitutes in complex water matrices. You will demonstrate the optimized process in real contaminated waters. You will disseminate research results through scientific publications and conference presentations. You will also assist in supervising doctoral researchers and Master's students and participate in drafting research grants. You will also have the possibility to carry out teaching activities. The work includes a short-term research visit to Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, in Germany. The details of the research visit will be planned and discussed with the selected candidate taking into account project needs.
