The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 4000 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for
to join us in the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, University of Oulu.
CMVS is a creative, open, and internationally attractive research unit, combining the expertise of computer vision and biosignal analysis scientists. With decades of pioneering research and strong international collaborations, CMVS continues to conduct globally acknowledged work at the forefront of machine vision, signal analysis, AI, and their applications in healthcare, industry, and future digital infrastructures.
We are hiring two postdoctoral researchers, each working in one of our ongoing research projects:
Position 1: Postdoctoral Researcher in Smart Video Sensorization for Healthcare (SViSenS Project)
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to the Smart Video Sensorization for Secure Healthcare Monitoring (SViSenS) project, which develops privacy-preserving, AI-driven video-based monitoring technologies for healthcare.
Your responsibilities include:
You will design and implement novel computer vision and machine learning methods for “sensorized” cameras that extract medically relevant features without transmitting raw video.
You will evaluate algorithms in real-time experimental settings and optimize them for privacy-preserving healthcare monitoring.
You will collaborate with healthcare professionals to validate solutions in use cases such as respiratory infections, stroke and TIA, Parkinson’s disease, and psychiatric conditions.
You will co-supervise doctoral and Master’s students, and contribute to high-quality scientific publications.
Position 2: Postdoctoral Researcher in Distributed & Edge AI (ResilientEdge Project)
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to the ResilientEdge project, an Interreg Aurora collaboration between Finland and Sweden. The project develops secure, adaptable, and scalable edge computing frameworks that integrate AI-driven intelligence and resilient infrastructure for SMEs in manufacturing, logistics, energy, and smart buildings. At CMVS, the focus is on hyperlocal computing, distributed sensing, and scene reconstruction, building synergies with our healthcare sensorization expertise.
Your responsibilities include:
You will design and implement resilient distributed AI methods for edge computing, including federated learning, agentic AI, and hyperlocal computations.
You will develop privacy-preserving and adaptive decision-making mechanisms for edge-to-cloud infrastructures.
You will contribute to the validation of solutions in real SME use cases, ensuring interoperability, security, and scalability in cross-border testbeds.
You will engage actively with regional and cross-border project partners and SMEs, co-developing use cases and pilots.
You will co-supervise junior researchers and students, and disseminate results through publications, open-access tools, and stakeholder workshops.
We expect from you:
A doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field (obtained no more than 10 years ago, and completed by the application deadline).
Strong expertise in at least one of the following: computer vision, machine learning, biosignal analysis, distributed AI, or edge computing.
Ability to conduct independent scientific work and publish in high-level venues.
Teaching skills and willingness to supervise students.
Fluent in written and spoken English.
Good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
We also appreciate:
Additionally,
For Position 1 (SViSenS):
For Position 2 (ResilientEdge):
The position is fixed-term for 3 years, starting as soon as possible or upon agreement.
The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approximately 3700-4300 € per month (before taxes).
A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
Interested? If yes, please apply by 09.11.2025 (23:59 Finnish local time) through our recruitment system.
By submitting an application, candidates will be considered for both positions, and during the recruitment process the selected candidates will be assigned to the most suitable role based on their background, skills, and overall fit. You may motivate your preference in the cover letter.
The application should be written in English and include the following:
The eligible applicants fitting best in the profile expected for the position will be invited to an on-site or remote interview. All applicants will be notified during the selection process.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, such as people of different ages, different genders, and members of different linguistic, cultural, or minority groups.
