Doctoral Researcher in Quantum Software Engineering

to join us in the M3S research unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

Empirical Software Engineering in Software, Systems, and Services (M3S) unit conducts research at a high international level and publishes widely in top-tier software engineering journals and conferences. M3S has strong industry collaboration and a proven track record of making a high impact in the industry. The group has a versatile portfolio of externally funded projects, including Horizon Europe, ITEA, the Academy of Finland, and Business Finland.

The M3S research theme on software-based systems and services promotes innovative and intelligent applications in multiple domains, including quantum software engineering. In close collaboration with relevant industry and academic organizations, we study the overall lifecycle of developing a quantum software system with strong theoretical and practical viewpoints. The preliminary aim of this doctoral researcher position is to define a quantum software architecture process and implement a deployment pipeline and a monitoring dashboard to support the process activities, similar to modern-day continuous software engineering facilities. Assistant professor Arif Ali Khan leads the research theme.

About the job

In this position, you will:

  • Conduct self-initiated and collaborative research contributing to your Ph.D. project.
  • Participate in activities and projects that lead to high-quality academic publications.
  • Collaborate with the group leader, other researchers, and our collaboration partners to define a robust process model for architecting a quantum software system. This includes work in Oulu and internationally.
  • Participate in teaching activities subject to the unit's needs and the successful candidate's interests. For example, courses cover the software engineering domain.

Who are you?

We welcome applicants from various backgrounds, including software engineering, computer science, information processing science, quantum computing, or related areas. Applicants should have strong research skills in technical and empirical sciences and you are interested in learning new technologies, including novel programming paradigms in quantum software engineering and/or the latest ML/AI development.

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field, e.g., computer science, software engineering, information processing science, quantum computing, or related areas.

  • Strong technical background (the project includes programming and technological development).

  • Previous experience (projects) in empirical software engineering research, machine learning, statistics, and quantum computing.

Salary

The position is fixed term for four years starting on 1.9.2023 or as negotiated. A probationary trial period of six months is applied to the position.

The starting salary will be based on level 2 of Finnish universities' demand level chart for teaching and research staff. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). The salary develops according to the achievements to be specified in the doctoral training plan. The starting salary is roughly 2500 - 2600 Euro/month (before taxes).
