Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now seeking

a Doctoral Researcher

to join our multidisciplinary research team to work for a new Infotech Oulu project “SAFE BIOMONITORING BY BIOICT INTEGRATED WEARABLES”

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research group led by Prof. Juha Röning from the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Oulu and the Biomimetics and Intelligent Systems Group, BISG. The Co-PIs in this Infotech research project are Professors Seppo Vainio, Valerio Izzi, Sylvain Sebert, and Ville Pimenoff, who represent of the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine and Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu, Finland. You will work as a team with guidance from the abovementioned research leaders. The work will be data driven, in the biomedical field based on large source of biomolecular data (e.g. GTEX), genomics (FINNGEN) and longitudinal cohorts (LongITools.org). You will also have some teaching opportunities. The team is part of the two flagships (https://www.genecellnano.fi/ and https://www.oulu.fi/6gflagship/).

About the job

Synopsis of the doctoral students (DS)

In view of its dynamic behaviour in the presence of multiples stress, the human skin is widely used to test cellular and molecular responses to specific treatments. Mirroring the biological and physiological internal changes in healthy and disease environments via the skin is the new revolutionary approach. The paradigm is based on the skin ultrastructure, consisting of keratinocytes expressing sensory receptors and producing sweat that is a natural reservoir of extracellular vesicles carrying wide range of biomolecules. The signatures of these EVs in the skin and its keratinocytes in healthy and diseased individuals are still to be explored. Therefore, the successful candidate will investigate EVs signatures from keratinocytes, sweat and EVs extracted from sweat using free-labelling methodologies such as Time-gated RAMAN, transcriptome, and metabolomics. The successful candidate will make use of the collected data to develop an algorithm enabling the identification between healthy and diseased samples based on their skin signatures.
