Postdoctoral Researcher in Mineral Processing

This position is a part of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Sustainable Mineral and Metal Processing Engineering-PROMISE and to support the work of the group on Mineral processing at the Oulu Mining School, the University of Oulu

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Sustainable Mineral and Metal Processing Engineering-EMJM PROMISE is being established due to the awareness of increasing demands in the quantity and diversity of minerals, metals, and materials as we move towards renewable energy, electromobility, digital communication and other clean-energy technologies.

PROMISE is a consortium involving the cooperation between four leading universities in mineral processing and mining engineering.

About the job

We welcome candidates with a specialization in Mineral Processing that complements and broadens our current strengths in teaching and administration of the education program EMJM-PROMISE. We particularly encourage candidates with mineral processing studies, practical experience, and with special emphasis on demonstrated experience in teaching courses in mineral separation and proposal preparation. Research and project management would be an asset.

The successful candidate will support the Erasmus PROMISE efforts to be a sustainable education program and get international quality recognition. The following tasks by not limited.

  • Assist teaching in lectures, evaluations and practices in the laboratory (various courses of mineral processing and modelling HSC, JKSim, and others)
  • Good knowledge of the processing of mineral raw materials, ideally of technology metals/minerals for applications in the field of renewable energies and other cutting-edge technologies.
  • Support the administrative role of PROMISE in OMS (handle scholarships, communication with migration office of countries of new students, insurances, etc) and ensure the welling of participants. Follow up on students’ evaluations, mentoring and tutoring.
  • Assist the general coordination of Erasmus Mundus Join Master.
  • Led the EQAR application for accreditation of the PROMISE program.
  • Able to develop new collaboration to improve the position of PROMISE and engage with national and international associate partners.
  • Broaden cooperation and funds for the program, obtaining competitive funds mainly to support education through participating in proposal preparation (Erasmus, MSC, others) and to ensure the sustainability of PROMISE.
  • Engage with partners and students and manage the joint application of new candidates on behalf of Oulu.
  • Supervision of master thesis
  • Organize summer school EMJM-PROMISE in UOulu.
  • Promote and communicate about PROMISE.
  • Increase the promotion of EMJM PROMISE in EU and IPA for the next intakes, also internally and nationally and internationally to meet targets.
  • Apply for competitive funds.
  • Participate in disseminating the program (e.g., in conferences, and social media)
  • Service to the academic community, academic activities and social significance

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you: 

  • A doctoral degree in Mineral Processing, with not more than 5 years of obtained.
  • Excellence in teaching, supervision, and mentorship (bachelor, master, doctoral students) demonstrated by a teaching portfolio that includes teaching evaluations, a statement of the candidate’s approach to teaching, and sample course outlines.
  • Mineral processing experience in a laboratory and plant (separation processes and modelling HSC, JKSIM, others)
  • A track-record of successful research/education funding
  • An innovative and robust research program, demonstrated by a strong record of publications and presentations in important venues, or a record of diverse teaching and research experiences, such as research-creation or community-engaged scholarship.
  • A clear career plan 

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 1.5 years as of 1.10.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on level 5 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3200-3800 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
