In conjunction with a recently-awarded Academy of Finland Fellowship ULTRAGRAM (Ultra-Compact Reconfigurable Antennas using Acoustic Resonance and Gravitational Mechanism), we are now looking for:

Doctoral Researcher in Antenna Design

To join us in the Centre for Wireless Communications – Radio Technologies (CWC-RT) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE). Close collaboration with the Microelectronics Research Unit (MIC) from ITEE is expected in this project.

CWC is one of the leading research units in wireless communications globally. Its mission is to conduct world-class research, create new technologies, train world-class graduates, and transfer technology to practical application.

Antenna research is conducted in the RF group in the CWC-RT research unit. The group and unit contribute to the national Finnish 6G Flagship and other European and national projects in the field, including, among others, the HEU TERRAMETA consortium and the national RF Sampo project. Besides that, antenna research in the group is also sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG) and the Academy of Finland (LiBERATE project). Who are you?

Aspiring applicants are expected to have:

  • an applicable Master's degree in electrical or communications engineering (or other relevant fields), completed with very good grades
  • strong fundamental knowledge of antennas, arrays, metasurfaces, and their foreseen integration with radio front-ends/electronics for biomedical applications
  • strong understanding of electromagnetic and multi-physics simulation principles and tools (e.g., CST Microwave Studio and COMSOL)
  • fluent in written and spoken English
  • positive mindset, high motivation, and work efficiency, readiness for demanding challenges
  • co-operational/team working skills and the ability to interact with people from various backgrounds
  • capability to write scientific publications based on the results achieved during doctoral studies

We also appreciate any of the following knowledge/experience:

  • antenna miniaturization
  • integration of antennas with tunable components for reconfiguration
  • antennas and RF prototyping and measurements

Salary

The position is fixed term for four (4) years starting from Sept 1, 2023, or as soon as possible after that.

The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
