Postdoctoral Researcher

to join us in Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu. The position is open in the research group led by Academy Research Fellow Pirjo Åström.

The Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine carries out high-quality research in selected focus areas in biomedical and translational research and in internal medicine. The biomedical and translational research include studies on the molecular mechanisms and potential therapies of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases as well as immunological disorders. The research unit is responsible for the teaching of pharmacology and toxicology, physiology, medical microbiology and immunology, and internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine.

About the job

We are examining various aspects of the human immune system, including dysregulated inflammation, infection susceptibility and autoimmunity. We utilize patient samples, in vitro models, and databases in our studies. Our special interests are in inflammation and immune mechanisms of central nervous system and musculoskeletal system in aiming to find novel disease mechanisms and susceptibility genes. The projects are implemented as international collaborations with experts from various fields.

As a postdoctoral researcher,

  • you will be designing and performing laboratory experiments, analysing data, and writing research reports,
  • you will participate in relevant seminars and conferences,
  • you will be involved in group management and supervising students,
  • you will perform teaching duties at the Faculty of Medicine.

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position,

  • You must have a doctoral degree in biochemistry, medicine, biology, pharmacology, or other related field that was awarded a maximum of ten years ago.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to pursue research work independently are needed.
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills are expected.
  • Ability to work in a team and supervise early-career scientists and students are essential.
  • Strong experience in hands-on molecular biology techniques and cell culture work are required.

We also appreciate

  • Finnish language skills
  • Knowledge on bioinformatics, supervisor experience and successful research work demonstrated by quality publications.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for maximum of 4 years as of 01.10.2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
