About the job

The postdoctoral researcher position is part of the Geographies of the Anthropocene Research Programme in the area of Biodiverse Anthropocenes (https://www.oulu.fi/en/research/arctic-interactions-resilience-and-global-change/biodiverse-anthropocenes). Biodiverse Anthropocenes is a research programme of the University of Oulu supported by the Academy of Finland's PROFI6 funding (2021–2026). This innovative and transdisciplinary research initiative brings together scholars from across the social and natural sciences to collaboratively investigate the biodiversity loss currently threatening multi-species well-being and planetary sustainability and to generate future-oriented solutions both in the Arctic and around the planet.

The postdoctoral research position is opened to strengthen the cluster with a specific focus on tourism and human geography, biodiversity, rewilding, sustainability, regenerative turn, climate change, the Anthropocene, and links with the Geography Research Unit’s existing strong research profile in Tourism Geographies.

We are looking for talented and highly motivated research-oriented individuals interested in biodiversity, rewilding, socio-ecological resilience, climate change, and tourism and their connections with adaptation and mitigation in the Anthropocene. We specifically welcome applicants researching sustainability, planning and governance, resilience, and vulnerability and how these relate to global tourism mobilities and activities. A proved research background in mixed-methods research design and geographies of tourism is an advantage.

The research profile of the successful candidate should complement the focus of the Tourism Geographies Research Group (TGs) at the Unit and the Biodiverse Anthropocenes Programme’s areas. Research in the Tourism Geographies group focuses on sustainable development and tourism, regional and local development issues in tourism, politics and political ecologies of tourism, community-based natural resource management, nature-based tourism, arctic tourism, tourism, and climate change adaptation and resilience.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct research work within a research team and disseminate research results in esteemed peer-reviewed international journals from the field as well as at international conferences during the period. Other duties include taking part in research projects, teaching undergraduate courses, and supervising theses. In addition, the candidate may be required to participate in administrative tasks of the university and/or the unit.

Eligibility criteria

The successful candidate must possess:

  • a doctoral degree in geography (or a related discipline), obtained within the past 10 years.
  • a demonstrated experience in tourism and climate change, socio-ecological vulnerability, rewilding and regenerative tourism, community-based tourism, arctic tourism, and responsible tourism.
  • fluency in both written and spoken English.
  • particularly good communication and teamwork skills; a strong record of scientific publishing in the top journals of the research field.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 2,5 year (30 months), with a start date no later than January 1, 2024.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
