The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for
Doctoral researcher
to join us in Process Metallurgy Research Unit at the Faculty of Technology.
The Process Metallurgy Research Unit (MET) focuses on pyrometallurgical metal production and other high-temperature processes with the main emphasis on the production of iron, steel and ferroalloys. Research is executed in close cooperation with the metallurgical industry. MET also has a wide national and international network with leading research institutes and universities working in the field of metallurgy and related disciplines. At the moment, the key areas of research are circular economy and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in metal production by hydrogen reduction, electrified processes and biofuels. The main external funding sources include Business Finland, the Academy of Finland, RFCS funds and Horizon Europe programs.
About the job
Fossil-free steelmaking is based on hydrogen reduction of iron and melting of reduced iron in electric arc furnace (EAF). H2-DRI, i.e. direct reduced iron produced by using hydrogen as a reductant, will have an important role as a raw material in fossil-free steelmaking along with scrap. Process Metallurgy Research Unit is looking for a doctoral researcher for the hydrogen reduction of iron ore and melting behavior of H2-DRI in EAF steelmaking. The goal is to increase understanding of hydrogen reduction of iron ores and the effect of C content on DRI melting in EAF process. The applicant is expected to have an interest in high temperature experiments and an educational background in process metallurgy, chemical engineering, chemistry or physics. Experience with programming and balance calculation software is an advantage.
