The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now recruiting a
Doctoral Researcher
to join us in Process Metallurgy Research Unit at the Faculty of Technology.
About the job
The Process Metallurgy Research Unit focuses on pyrometallurgical metal production and other high-temperature processes with the main emphasis on the production of iron, steel and ferroalloys. Research is executed in close cooperation with the metallurgical industry. MET also has a wide national and international network with leading research institutes and universities working in the field of metallurgy and related disciplines. At the moment, the key areas of research are circular economy and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in metal production by hydrogen reduction, electrified processes and biofuels. The main external funding sources include Business Finland, the Academy of Finland, RFCS funds and Horizon 2020 programs.
The HELIOS Doctoral Network will train 10 motivated and talented Doctoral Candidates (DCs) in breakthrough technologies for the hydrogen-based production of green steel, including both carbon steel and stainless steel. These DCs will be equipped with the necessary science capital and diverse transferable skills to pursue their careers in Europe and become the experts that our society needs to achieve the climate-neutral production of steel by 2050. The position in question is DC9: Advanced Characterisation Of Hydrogen Plasma And The Related Reduction Phenomena
In DC9, we offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and talented individual to contribute to the optical emission spectroscopic (OES) research on hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR) of various oxides, such as iron ore. As a doctoral researcher, you will have a key role in characterizing the state of the plasma in different process steps by the means of OES and image analysis. With the training in experimental planning and conducting HPSR experiments, you will be given the tools to develop OES-based process optimization for the HPSR together with the experts in industrial OES applications.
