We are now looking for

a Doctoral Researcher

to join us in the INTERACT research unit Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, University of Oulu, Finland.

Working environment

You will become a part of the Academy of Finland-funded research project “Critical DataLit: Cultivating justice-oriented data literacies among GenZ” (Critical DataLit). The appointed person is expected to conduct rigorous, nationally and internationally recognized research in Oulu, Finland. The position also includes some teaching duties. The research topic focuses on a social justice-oriented approach to data literacy with an arts and technology approach. Research duties include reviewing relevant literature, collecting empirical data through working with stakeholders (schoolchildren, teachers, activity organizers, and other relevant actors), analyzing the data with the help of theoretical frameworks, and writing academic conference and journal publications.

The background of the applicant needs to be in Human-Computer Interaction or a related field with clear contact with technology. We expect from you:

  • A master’s degree or have it completed latest on August 31, 2023
  • Interest to develop data pedagogies using participatory design and creative methods with a focus on social justice
  • Skills and interest in qualitative, interpretive, and participatory research work with stakeholders, taking a theoretically oriented approach
  • Capability for independent work with a large number of stakeholders in an international environment
  • Speak and write high-quality English
  • Keen interest in writing (for research publications)

We also see as merit:

  • Previous experience with working with children and young people
  • Experience with arts-based approaches
  • Skills in technical development for prototyping technologies, such as making and digital fabrication
  • Finnish language skills

 

Salary

The position is fixed-term 01.09.2023-31.08.2027. A six-month trial period will be applied to the position. The salary of a doctoral researcher will be based on levels 2-4 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition to the basic salary, a supplementary salary will be given for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50% of the basic salary level for the post. In practice, the salary is roughly 2300 – 2600 € (before taxes) per month.
