Postdoctoral Researcher

To join us in the 6G Flagship program at the Center for Wireless Communications - Radio Technologies at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

6G Flagship is the world’s first 6G research program, a global leader in 5G adoption, and a preferred research partner in 6G development. We promote high-quality 6G research to create future know-how and sustainable solutions for society’s needs in the 2030s. We operate under the University of Oulu, which also funds us together with the Academy of Finland. Research in 6G Flagship is organized into four interrelated strategic research areas (SRA) where scientific breakthroughs are sought in the development of fundamental technology components for 6G systems. They are:

• Wireless Connectivity
• Devices and Circuit Technology
• Distributed Intelligence
• Services and Applications

This position is part of the Wireless Connectivity SRA.

About the job

This position is part of a research project that aims to develop, demonstrate and disseminate new remote sensing, wireless connectivity, and data fusion solutions for industrial rail and road logistics and transport applications in remote areas. The expected results are holistic guidelines for implementing sensing/connectivity (5G/6G) infrastructure, data transparency, and traceability for supply chain workflow while promoting inclusive industrialization, data analytics-driven visualization, and predictive optimization of supply chain workflow.

As a postdoctoral researcher in data fusion integration for industrial logistics and transport, you will develop and innovate data science solutions for remote sensing connected to remote industrial infrastructure. This includes but not limited to, multi-modal data fusion, data visualization, and analytics close to the source. The AI/ML models should work in many types of platforms, from EDGE to public cloud, and maybe there will be some federated learning models also.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary research group and work closely with the project’s industrial partner(s).

Who are you?

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

• A doctoral degree in a related field with experience in data science and ML/AI. Students near completion can also apply. The doctoral degree must be completed no more than ten years ago.
• Good programming skills, in particular Python. Matlab and R is considered an asset
• Good English skills (writing, speaking).
• An open mindset, willingness to learn, and the ability to work in teams. 
• A proven track record of publication in top venues in line with the experience level.

We also appreciate

• Industrial experience.
• Familiarity with databases and SQL.
• Understanding the concepts of robust software development, such as version control.
• Experience working on large research projects.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for three (3) years as of the 1st of September 2023 or as soon as possible after that.

The salary will be based on levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
