Successful applicant will belong to the strategic Biocenter Oulu spearhead project headed by the professors Lauri Eklund and Vesa Kiviniemi providing highly complementary expertise in endothelial cell and molecular biology, advanced microscopic imaging, disease modeling in mice, clinical neuroimaging, and brain clearance therapy research.

SUBJECT FIELD: Brain is metabolically highly active organ and requires an efficient system to remove the resulting metabolic waste, while failures in the clearance can cause neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease. In most cases no therapy or prevention exists due to limited understanding of clearance mechanisms, lack of suitable techniques for clinical monitoring and limited knowledge of how to translate experimental findings to the clinical work.

Kiviniemi’s research focuses on developing new methods for analysis of functional neuroimaging data, early diagnostics, and novel treatment modalities for dementia. In this project we will use clinical imaging technologies to advance the understanding of neurohydrodynamic clearance mechanisms in brains, analysis of microscopic video image data from pre-clinical models and data from potential treatments to enhance brain clearance functionality to prevent neurological diseases.
