One Doctoral Researcher and one Postdoctoral Researcher

to join us in the project "Gut Microbiome in Obesity from Birth to Adulthood" at Biocenter Oulu and Research Unit of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine

Our focus is in the translational science connecting basic research into results that eventually directly benefit humans receiving treatment in clinical medicine.

About the job

Doctoral researcher:

As a doctoral researcher you will conduct research in the project "Gut Microbiome in Obesity from Birth to Adulthood" at Biocenter Oulu. In Gut Microbiome in Obesity from Birth to Adulthood project your responsibilities include immunological assays of newborn infants and microbiome analysis of maternal and pediatric samples. We use several advanced methods including investigation of microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles. We also investigate fecal samples from newborns who undergo fecal microbiota transplant from a lean donor or obese mother at birth. You will be part of multidisciplinary research group including pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, infectious diseases specialists, microbiologists, clinical microbiologists, immunologists and gut microbiome researchers, ranging from basic science to clinical medicine.

Postdoctoral researcher:

As a postdoctoral researcher you will join us in the project "Gut Microbiome in Obesity from Birth to Adulthood" at Biocenter Oulu. In Gut Microbiome in Obesity from Birth to Adulthood project your responsibilities include advanced bioinformatics analysis regarding microbiome data, including the characterization of microbiota-derived vesicles, metagenomic comparative analysis of mother and child samples and cross-study designs using machine learning approach. You will be part of multidisciplinary research group multidisciplinary research group including pediatricians, pediatric endocrinologists, infectious diseases specialists, microbiologists, clinical microbiologists, immunologists and gut microbiome researchers, ranging from basic science to clinical medicine.

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

Doctoral researcher:

  • Master's degree in relevant field, including Master of Science in Technology
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • IT skills, communication skills 
  • See also the requirements of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS)

Postdoctoral researcher:

  • Doctoral degree in molecular biology, translational science or other suitable field
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • IT skills, communication skills etc.

We also appreciate

  • Finnish language skills
  • Experience in immunological research for the position of Doctoral researcher
  • Experience in gut microbiome research and advanced bioinformatics including machine learning approach for the position of Postdoctoral researcher. 

Salary

The positions are fixed-term for 4 years as of 01.01.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Doctoral researcher:

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

Postdoctoral researcher:

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position
