to join us at the Research Unit of Biomedicine and Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine.

About the job

We are looking for two doctoral researchers to join the research group of Associate Professor Eija Pirinen or Professor Karl-Heinz Herzig at the Biomedicine and Internal Medicine Research Unit, the Faculty of Medicine in a project aiming at the regulation of metabolic control for the treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases.   

Description of the project: Mitochondrial dysfunction has emerged as a prominent feature in metabolically important peripheral tissues in obesity and metabolic diseases. Consequently, mitochondrial targeting is nowadays considered as a promising treatment approach for these diseases. In this project, we will elucidate novel treatment strategies to improve metabolic control. This research project is funded by the Biocenter Oulu as one of the spearhead projects related Lifelong Health focus area.

What you will do?

You will use in vitro and in vivo models to study the effect of novel treatment strategies on cellular, whole organ (spheroids) and animal metabolism. You will need to analyse the outcome using various biochemical assay systems. Animal licence and previous experience in the field of obesity and metabolic diseases is of advantage.

Who are you?

We seek highly motivated scientists who have the ability to work independently as well as in a group with a drive to excel in research.

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Master's degree in the field of life sciences such as molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmacy or related fields.
  • Molecular biology and biochemical techniques.
  • Prior experience in cell culture experiments.
  • Finnish animal license would be beneficial.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.

The following experience and skills would be helpful:

  • Prior experience in measuring mitochondrial function (mitochondrial respirometry analyses).
  • The knowledge of 3D cell culture models.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 4 years as of 01.01.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
