The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for
to join our Industrial Water Research Group in Chemical Process Engineering, Faculty of Technology in the University of Oulu. The Doctoral Researcher will be based in the Interreg Aurora project “New tools for managing PFAS challenge (NeTo-PFAS, 2024-2026)”. The project will focus on developing sustainable and cost-effective solutions to break down PFAS in the environment. The combination of microbial degradation and chemical degradation will be tested for PFAS elimination in contaminated waters. The project advances our understanding of biodegradability of PFAS and their substitutes as well as their biodegradation efficiencies in complex water matrices. The study is also expected to provide novel insights into PFAS biodegradation mechanisms and pathways. The NeTo-PFAS consortium is made up of three partners, Luleå University of Technology (coordinator), University of Oulu, and UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
As a doctoral researcher, you will investigate the microbial degradation of long- and short-chain PFAS and their substitutes in complex water matrices. You will demonstrate the optimized process in real contaminated waters in collaboration with other partners. You will disseminate research results through scientific publications and conference presentations. The work includes a short-term research visit to Luleå University of Technology, in Sweden. The details of the research visit will be planned and discussed with the selected candidate taking into account project needs.
