Doctoral researcher

to join us in Magnesia-based Materials and Systems teamFibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit at the Faculty of Technology. The quest is a part of our effort to decarbonize cement.

Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit carries out research in the field of advanced inorganic materials in circular economy. The multicultural research group consists of 50 people; 3 professors, 15 doctors and 24 doctoral researchers. We have an open and encouraging working atmosphere and have a substantial track record in attracting competitive funding including Horizon Europe, the Research Council of Finland and Business Finland programmes.

About the job

The doctoral researcher position is for 4 years and a part of Durable Mg-based cement: Toward carbon-negative concrete project funded by the Research Council of Finland. Your research will concentrate on the nucleation and growth of magnesium carbonates and how to steer the phenomena using additives. The work will look into reaction pathways and formation mechanism of magnesium carbonates and apply these insights to produce durable cement based on magnesium carbonate. Your task will be to carry out multidisciplinary research with state-of-the art methods, including both experimental work (chemistry and material synthesis) and thermodynamic modelling.

Who are you?

  • We are looking for a team player with solid research skills.
  • You must have a Master's degree in materials science, materials engineering, chemistry, physical chemistry or in a closely related field. Please note that your degree should be obtained within the last 5 years, latest by the start of the employment.
  • We expect you to have knowledge in laboratory and material synthesis and analysis technique(s)
  • Experience with cement chemistry or crystal nucleation is an advantage. We also appreciate experiences in using additives to steer reactions in cement or crystal growth.
  • You are expected to have good communication skills in both written and spoken English

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 4 years starting 01.04.2024 or as agreed

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes). A six-month trial period will be applied to the position.
