The Centre for Languages and Communication Lingua of the University of Oulu is now looking for a

University Teacher of German

to work with us on a permanent basis.

The Centre for Languages and Communication Lingua offers language teaching in eight different languages to degree students at the University of Oulu. We also offer training based on the needs of university staff and working life. We continuously develop our courses in cooperation with all faculties and other stakeholders. Planning of our curricula and courses is closely tied to working life and internationalization.

Tasks

As a University Teacher, your primary duty (75 %) consists of teaching German language and culture to university students at the A1–B2 CEFR level. A smaller part of your duty (25 %) will include the teaching of another language, which can be English (levels B2–C1), second national language Swedish, (levels B1–B2), or Finnish as a second language (levels A1–B2). The other target language to be taught will be determined based on your qualification. 

In both languages, your tasks include evaluation, preparation of teaching materials, and active participation in the development of teaching. Your target student groups are bachelor and master’s degree students in different faculties. The language of teaching is German and the second target language to be taught. Finnish or English can be used as supporting languages.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for an experienced German teacher who is passionate about teaching. We require the ability to teach German language and culture on different skill levels and the ability to create learning materials for heterogeneous groups of learners. The position requires similar competences in the teaching of another target language.

For you to succeed and thrive in the task, we require:

  • An applicable master's degree in the field of German, and at minimum, basic and intermediate university studies in the second target language to be taught.
  • 60 credits of pedagogical studies or at least 25 credits of university pedagogical studies.
  • Good skills in teaching, which will be evaluated based on your teaching portfolio and a teaching demonstration.
  • Excellent oral and written skills of the languages to be taught.
  • Fluency in Finnish and English.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience of language assessment based on the CEFR framework.
  • Strong digital-pedagogical skills to organize blended language learning.

In addition, we appreciate:

  • Advanced university studies in the second language to be taught.

  • Prior experience of working in multicultural work communities.
  • Experience and skills in acknowledging accessibility and the ability to create learning materials for heterogeneous groups of learners.

  • Experience of conducting research related to the learning or teaching of languages and communication. 

Salary for the position

The position is permanent starting 1.8.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of 6 months is applied. The salary follows the requirement level 5 for teaching and research staff according to the General Collective Agreement for universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The salary for new employees in similar positions is typically 3 700–3 900 €/month. 

University Teachers adhere to the 1612 hours annual working time.
