We are now looking for an

Assistant/Associate Professor

to join us in the Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences at the Faculty of Science.

The Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences has an internationally strong position at the forefront of research in its focus areas. The position will be connected to the Inverse Problems Group within the Research Unit. We are a member of the Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME), funded by the Research Council of Finland for the period 2024 – 2031, as well as the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems Research 2018-2025.

About the job

The new Tenure Track position is in the field of Applied Mathematics relevant to the teaching and research portfolio of the Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences. Suitable topics include expertise in, but are not limited to, numerical analysis and numerical methods, partial differential equations, nonlinear optimization, convex analysis, as well as Bayesian inverse problems. Familiarity with inverse problems and their application is highly welcome. This position aims to provide complementary expertise in applied mathematics relevant to the research themes within FAME and the inverse problems group in Oulu.

As Assistant/Associate professor you are expected to concentrate on research and support of doctoral education in applied mathematics in connection or in collaboration with FAME and the inverse problems group.

Other duties include:

  • Teaching of 2 courses (5 ECTS)/year in your field of expertise. 
    (Teaching duties may change after the tenure track period)
  • Supervision of doctoral researchers and related support 
  • Supervision of master thesis topics
  • Support of FAME related activities
  • Participation in external funding applications

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you: 

As an Assistant professor:

  • Doctoral degree in applied mathematics or closely related field.
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work independently and have proven teaching skills.
  • In order to be eligible for a position as Assistant Professor, you must have received your doctoral degree not more than ten years ago.
  • Fluency in English is required.

As an Associate professor:

  • Doctoral degree in applied mathematics or closely related field.
  • You must demonstrate evidence of scientific research work and relevant teaching skills.
  • You must have the ability to lead research and experience of acquiring external research funding.
  • We also expect you to have sufficient and relevant experience in international scientific work and evidence of international cooperation.
  • Fluency in English is required.

We also appreciate

  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration and applications of inverse problems in the medical sciences or engineering.
  • An open mind to new challenges and applications.
  • Motivation to teach in Finnish after the tenure track period.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 5 years as of 01.08.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. At the end of the 5 year term you will be evaluated for advancement to the next career stage.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 (assistant) and 6-7 (associate) of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3800-4900 € (assistant)/4400-5600€ (associate) per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

  5. A research and action plan (2 pages): outlining previous research, research merits, and future research directions.
  6. Brief account of teaching merits or a teaching portfolio
    (1 page for Assistant level / 2 pages Associate level)
    These should cover the following points:
    1. Teaching philosophy, teaching strategies, and methods.
    2. Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching.
    3. Description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks).
    4. Evaluation of teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards, and assessed test lectures).
    5. Plans for future directions of teaching in the discipline concerned.
  7. Contact details of 2 persons available for recommendation
