Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to join us in Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. CMVS provides an inspiring and international research environment, and it is renowned worldwide for its scientific breakthroughs in machine vision and signal analysis. Many of its results, including the Local Binary Pattern, face analysis and geometric camera calibration methodologies, are highly cited and have been adopted for different types of problems and applications around the world.  The unit is highly international with research personnel and visiting scholars representing a wide range of nationalities and cultures.

The main research interests of CMVS are in computer vision and machine learning, affective computing, multimodal image and signal analysis, low-energy computing, and applications in affective human-computer interaction, biometrics, augmented reality, and biomedicine. In physiological signal analysis basic, applied, and translational research in biomedical engineering is carried out to tackle key challenges of next generation personalized medicine and wellness solutions. In its field the Research Unit is globally highly ranked with research activities based on international collaborations. The partners of CMVS include three institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Computing Technology, Psychology, and Automation), National University of Singapore, Stanford University (USA), University of Georgia (USA), Imperial College London, Czech Technical University (Prague), University of Maryland (USA), Idiap Research Institute (Switzerland), and EPFL (Switzerland).  In education, CMVS is responsible for organizing many artificial intelligence related courses to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Oulu.

About the job

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join a research project that aims at creating new techniques and algorithms for 3D computer vision and other related fields of applications, using both learning-based and traditional geometric methods with a particular focus on algebraic solvers. The project is led by Professor Janne Heikkilä, and it is funded by Research Council of Finland (Academy of Finland).

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be conducting your own independent research, collaborating with other team members working on the same project or the same subject, and writing research papers and technical reports. Specifically, for this position you will be working at the intersection of mathematics and computer vision.

You will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • Study recent literature and relevant subjects in 3D computer vision, machine learning and/or applied mathematics, as well as formulate and refine the research problems.
  • Develop the solutions and implement the algorithms using popular programming languages, such as C/C++/Python/Matlab.
  • Publish papers in top conferences and journals.
  • Co-supervise a doctoral researcher.
  • Explore new innovative applications in 3D computer vision and beyond for the methods devised in the project.

What we offer?

  • The support of an experienced and enthusiastic team where you can share your expertise and grow as an expert.
  • Wellness benefit ePassi covering sport, culture and well-being. Read more about other staff benefits here.
  • Our Buddy Programme and Spouse Network support you and close-ones in settling into Oulu.

  • Experience and high-quality international peer-reviewed publications in the field of computer vision or applied mathematics.
  • Ability for independent scientific work.

We also appreciate

  • Expertise in 3D computer vision and/or geometric vision.
  • Strong mathematical background in areas such as linear algebra, algebraic geometry, computational geometry, and numerical optimization.
  • Experience in symbolic computation, applications of algebraic geometry, and computer algebra systems.
  • Machine learning skills and experience.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years as of 01.08.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities.
