The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now looking for a

Doctoral researcher

to join the Structural Design and Engineering Mechanics Research Group of the Civil Engineering Research Unit (CIV). The doctoral researcher is positioned in the subject of numerical simulation of structures in civil engineering applications.

The Civil Engineering Research Unit (CIV) is networked regionally, nationally and internationally and provides undergraduate and postgraduate education for demanding positions in the private and public sectors. The unit conducts research in interaction with other disciplines and the surrounding society and has a Bachelor level double degree program with the Nanjing Institute of Technology (NJIT) in China's Jiangsu province.

About the position

The position includes working on research projects that aim to develop methodologies to utilize physics-based simulation technology for designing sustainable engineering structures. The developed models are typically based on the theory of elasticity or plasticity and the applied methods range from the finite element method (FEM) to explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). In addition, understanding the principles of verification, validation and uncertainty quantification related to engineering decision-making process is of utmost importance (simulation governance). Moreover, achieving robust interoperability is essential for efficient collaboration and accurate data exchange within the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.
