 Doctoral Researcher

to join Learning and Educational Technology Research Lab (LET Lab), Faculty of Education and Psychology at the University of Oulu.

In this position, you will participate in LET Lab research as part of the European Commission’s Horizon Europe-funded project TAICo (Teacher-AI Complementarity). As part of the project, you will have a carefully guided doctoral research experience in which you will receive support from experts across the international project in pursuing research which supports an ambitious and societally relevant problem, enabling you to continue into demanding expert positions in industry, the public sector, and academia.

About the job

We are looking for a doctoral researcher to contribute of research on human-AI complementarity in the context of learning at the LET Lab as part of the TAICo project. The project will provide insight into the complementary role of teachers and AI in complex and dynamic educational settings. LET will specifically contribute research to the project which investigates the interaction between teachers and AI systems which monitor and invite regulation of learning in collaborative learning tasks. You will conduct research within a team, manage project-related tasks, and disseminate research findings in leading international scientific journals. The topic will be closely connected to the Hybrid Intelligence research programme in Oulu University.

Who are you?

 In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you: 

  • Master’s degree in education, educational psychology, learning sciences, cognitive sciences, computer sciences or related areas
  • Understanding of learning theories and self-regulated learning theory
  • Methodological interest/skills in multimodal data and analysis, mixed-methods research, and research in real-world settings
  • Interest in human-AI complementarity, including prior experience with topics like learning analytics, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, conversational analysis, digital humanities, etc
  • Fluent English or Finnish
  • Agentic work approach and good collaboration and academic writing skills
  • Have some experience in research data collection and/or data coding/analysis. Experience with data programming (R/SPSS, Python), software development (Python), or with specialist software (Praat, NVivo, Observer) is a plus, but not required.

Position and salary

Doctoral researchers selected in the pilot programme will by default be offered a three-year (36 month) fixed-term full-time employment contract by University of Oulu. These positions are available for highly motivated and talented researchers wishing to undertake and complete training for a research-focused doctoral degree, starting 16.9. or as soon as possible (funding ends 12/2027). A six-month trial period is applied in the position.

The salary of the selected doctoral researchers will be paid monthly. The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2500-2800 € per month (before taxes).  

The employment contracts are based on a total working time of 1 612 hours per year, which gives the doctoral researchers freedom to plan their working hours.

The position is fixed-term for 3 years.
