We are now looking for a

Tactical Radio Networks Specialist

to join the 6G Test Center at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), which combines cutting-edge research and close cooperation with actors in the defense and security industry. You will work as a project researcher at the Linnanmaa campus of the University of Oulu as part of an international network and the NATO DIANA 6G Test Center, which is the first of its kind in the world.

Our TST faculty is one of the world's leading scientific communities developing the ICT field. The 6G Test Center is an integral part of the 6GFlagship research program, which is the world's first 6G research, development and innovation ecosystem funded by the Academy of Finland and the University of Oulu. The 6G Test Center aims to be a leader in testing dual-use technologies. The goal is to develop next-generation network functionalities by combining 5G/6G and artificial intelligence technologies, enable testing of arctic and challenging environments in the most realistic possible operating environment, and create new market opportunities by supporting Finnish and international innovations in the NATO DIANA global network.

About the job

  • You will work as a project researcher in the 6G Test Center of the CWC-Networks and Systems unit in the NATO DIANA program.
  • Configure, test, and maintain solutions related to tactical networks and/or critical communications, as well as their associated equipment.
  • Procure external installation and design services and supervise their implementation.
  • Actively participate in the development and maintenance of the 6G Test Center's radio and tactical networks so that they meet NATO and defense sector requirements.
  • Participate in the design of the radio network architecture, capacity definition and optimization, and the implementation of new 5G/6G technologies and standards.
  • Monitor network performance, troubleshoot problems with troubleshooting tools and maintain top quality systems.
  • Test new network elements and ensure their compatibility with security design and implementation for critical communication needs.
  • Collaborate with NATO and defense networks and leading players in the industry

What are we looking for?

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect you to have:

  • A relevant higher education degree, such as an engineering or master’s degree.
  • Experience in designing and maintaining solutions for critical communications or tactical networks.
  • Understanding of spectrum management, radio frequency optimization, and performance analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and experience in multi-stakeholder environments, especially in publicly funded projects.

The position requires an approved security clearance 

Salary

The position is fixed-term, starting as soon as possible and lasting until 31 December 2026.

The salary for a project researcher will be based on the levels MV 7-8 of the demand level chart for other expert and support staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3000-3500 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
