Two research assistants

For our upcoming data collection, our research project team is hiring 2 research assistants to support us during the preparation and main phases of the data collection from March to May/June 2025, and in an eye tracking experiment. The positions are part-time.

Project:

Our research project, titled "Linguistic distance, language learning, and educational attainment,"

aims to investigate the effect of linguistic distance on educational performance and understand what makes students successful English learners in primary school. For more on our research project check out our website  

About the job

Position and tasks:

Locations:

  • Based at the University of Oulu, where you will have access to a dedicated workspace and all necessary equipment.
  • Work in classrooms at various schools located in Oulu, Liminka, and possibly Rovaniemi.

Key Tasks:

  • Participate in training sessions
  • Administering the data collection procedure in classrooms (with support from the research team)
  • Print and prepare test materials
  • Enter and organize data
  • Translate project documents between English and Finnish
  • Support the team with diverse research-related tasks

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Completed bachelor's degree or equivalent level of studies in education, psychology, or humanities
  • Finnish as a native language or native-like proficiency (C1)
  • Advanced English skills (C1)
  • Experience in working with children
  • Good organizational skills
  • Knowledge of SPSS is a benefit 
  • Flexible availability for fixed appointments for data collection in April- May
  • Outside this period working hours can be arranged according to own schedule 
  • Willingness to assist in eye-tracking experiments is welcomed

Salary

The positions are part-time and fixed term starting from 15.3.2025 until May/June. Part-time position (25%) during preparation and post-data collection phases.  Potential increase to 50% in April and May during the main phase of data collection.  

The salary will be based on level 3 of the demand level chart for other experts and support staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 650 EUR per month (before taxes). A trial period is applied for the position.
