Doctoral researcher

or a project researcher to join us in the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oulu, Finland. 

The Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) at the University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary unit within the Faculty of Medicine. HST focuses on high-quality research and education in health sciences and technology, aiming to develop innovative solutions for digital social and healthcare. The unit's expertise spans clinical sciences, biomedical engineering, medical physics, medical informatics, biomarkers, connected health, nursing science, and health management science.

About the job

We are seeking a Doctoral Researcher to contribute to a groundbreaking project focused on transforming clinical learning environments for nursing students and new graduate nurses through Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.

This innovative project aims to develop and implement a Clinical Learning Environment and Supervision System, leveraging XR and AI to create immersive, interactive learning experiences that closely replicate real-life clinical scenarios. By integrating cutting-edge technologies, the project seeks to:

• Enhance nursing education by providing a safe and controlled platform for practicing clinical skills.
• Improve competence, confidence, and preparedness among nursing students and new graduates.
• Foster strong collaborations with SMEs, involving them in development and pilot testing of XR-AI solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct research and development on XR- and AI-enhanced learning systems in nursing education.
• Design and evaluate immersive learning experiences for clinical skill development.
• Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data on nursing students' learning outcomes and experiences.
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals, educators, and SMEs in testing and refining the system.
• Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at academic and industry conferences.

Who are you?

We expect from you:

• A Master’s degree in nursing science, health sciences, medical science, medical technology, health education, AI/XR applications, or a related field.
• Interest or experience in XR, AI-enhanced learning, and clinical education methodologies.
• Strong skills in research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative).
• Excellent English communication and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years as of 17.3.2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2500-2900 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
