Doctoral Researcher

to join us in the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology at the Faculty of Medicine.

About the job

This doctoral researcher position is part of the strategic spearhead projects funded by Infotech for the years 2026-2028. Infotech is one of the four multidisciplinary research centers at the University of Oulu. This specific project is titled: Harder, better, faster, stronger MRI: Computational and Engineering Advances for the Future of Quantitative MRI. The research project aims to accelerate data acquisition and enhance reconstruction accuracy by integrating sparse sampling strategies, neural network–based reconstruction, and a virtual imaging platform. The goal is to develop fast, robust, and clinically viable quantitative MRI methods that enable reliable quantitative biomarkers for improved clinical diagnostics.

You will join a dynamic research team working at the interface of the university and university hospital. Our group is also part of the Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME), which provides a collaborative and supportive environment, uniting physicists, engineers, mathematicians, and applied scientists.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting research in clinical-related MRI research
  • Collaborating with national and international research institutions and companies
  • Writing scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals

  • Experience in experimental or clinical MRI
  • A strong interest in interdisciplinary scientific work (demonstrated by the motivation letter).
  • Programming skills with Matlab, C/C++ or Python.
  • Research experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence and/or inverse problem applied to imaging applications.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 3 years. The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 2600-3200 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied to the position.
