Project researcher

to join us at the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.

CMVS is a creative, open, and internationally attractive research center combining expertise in computer vision, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and advanced communication systems. Through extensive international collaboration, CMVS conducts cutting-edge research with strong academic and industrial impact.

About the job

The position is related to the ResilientEdge and Sovereign-6G projects, focusing on advanced data engineering solutions for next-generation edge intelligence and 6G systems.

In this position:

  • You design and implement scalable data pipelines for large-scale research and experimental datasets.
  • You develop and maintain data platforms supporting edge computing and 6G research environments.
  • You architect data lake and lakehouse solutions for structured and unstructured data.
  • You implement stream and batch processing workflows for multimodal sensing and communication data.
  • You ensure data quality, reproducibility, and governance in research data infrastructures.
  • You collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including experts in telecommunications, AI, signal processing, and distributed systems.
  • You contribute to technical documentation and project deliverables within international research consortia.

The work is carried out in close collaboration with national and international academic and industrial partners.

Who are you?

You are a proactive and solution-oriented data engineering professional who enjoys working in technically demanding research environments and delivering robust, scalable systems.

We expect from you:

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Python and/or other relevant languages)
  • Experience in designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Experience with distributed data processing frameworks
  • Experience with data platforms, databases, and large-scale data management
  • Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Good understanding of software engineering practices
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills
  • Fluent written and spoken English

We also appreciate:

  • Experience with stream processing technologies (e.g., Kafka or similar)
  • Experience with data lake or lakehouse architectures
  • Knowledge of edge computing, AI/ML data workflows, or wireless/6G systems
  • Experience working in international research or industry projects
  • Finnish language skills

Your work will directly support the development of resilient edge intelligence and sovereign next-generation communication systems.

Salary

The position is fixed-term for two (2) years starting from 15 March 2026 or later as agreed.

The salary will be based on the level MV06-07 of the demand level chart for other experts and support staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approximately 2800–3300 € per month (before taxes). A 6-month trial period applies to the position.
