We are now looking for

Doctoral Researcher

to join the Intelligent Medical Systems Research Group (IMEDS) at the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology, Faculty of Medicine. 

The IMEDS group is led by Assistant Professor Aleksei Tiulpin and is rapidly growing. We are a multinational diverse team of engineers and computer scientists physically located at the Oulu University Hospital, and we have close collaborations with clinicians. In our projects, we develop new methods to advance medicine with machine learning. 

The recruited researcher will also be co-advised by the clinical collaborators from radiology and cardiology: Dr. Mika Nevalainen, MD PhD and Dr. Jani Tikkanen, MD PhD. The recruited researcher will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from Stanford School of Medicine, United States, and KU Leuven, Belgium.

About the job

Our group is looking for highly motivated talented individual to conduct cutting edge research in the realm of opportunistic CT and machine learning, with a special focus on Deep Learning. Your goal will be to build methods that can analyze CT imaging data to predict longitudinal cardiovascular disease outcomes. 

You will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

  • Complete a 4-year doctoral degree.
  • Study theoretical advances in linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics, and apply them in the development of new machine learning methods.
  • Create software packages with computationally-efficient implementations of the developed methods.
  • Publish results in the top-tier venues.
  • Analyze large scale real world clinical data and aim to translate methodological advances to clinical practice. 
  • Contribute to the general activities of the research group, such as teaching.

Who are you?

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you to have the following qualifications:

  • Master's degree in the field of Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science 
  • Desire to make impact in medicine and health through machine learning.
  • Ability to think out-of-the-box.
  • Genuine curiosity and passion towards research.
  • Responsibility and can-do attitude.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python and Scientific Python Stack.
  • Excellent mathematical skills: knowledge of Algebra, Statistics and Probability is required for the position. 
  • Excellent scientific writing and communication skills (English language)

Salary

The position is fixed-term for 4 years as of 01.05.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes).  A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
