We are now looking for a 

Doctoral Researcher

to join us at the Systems Epidemiology section of the Research Unit of Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oulu & Biocenter Oulu.

About the job

We are a world leading research team in epidemiological studies of population-scale metabolomics datasets and related genetic analyses. Our mission is to improve the aetiological knowledge, characterization, detection, and prediction of cardiometabolic conditions such as obesity, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, atherosclerosis, fatty liver and chronic kidney disease.

We are looking for an ambitious doctoral student who strives for scientific excellence; we will teach you how to use epidemiological techniques to answer fundamental questions about how metabolic disease risk manifests in human populations. We expect to publish in top journals in the field and we will utilise the globally unique Finnish data resources as well as large-scale datasets from across the globe via an extensive collaborative network of leading scientists in lipidomics, epidemiology, clinical trials, and biostatistics.

This position is for an individual to take part in large-scale metabolic and/or genetic research of human metabolism in epidemiological contexts. We would expect you to have inherent interest in scientific research and basic knowledge in

  • human metabolism and/or physiology
  • human genetics
  • epidemiology

Your responsibilities would include

  • doctoral studies
  • working as a team member in various projects
  • independent statistical analyses of various omics-data

Who are you?

In order to succeed in and enjoy this position, we expect from you: 

  • A Master’s degree in natural or medical sciences
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Good IT skills
  • Good writing skills
  • Good communication skills and capability for teamwork
  • Basic statistical skills
  • Use of the R software (or willingness to learn immediately)
  • Interest in high-quality science

We would also appreciate:

  • First author publications in leading scientific journals
  • Finnish language skills

Salary

The position is fixed-term from 1.3.2024 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 31.12.2027.

The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2400-2800 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
