We are now looking for

Postdoctoral Researcher

to work for the project Triggers for collaborative learning regulation (TRIGGER).

The position is open at the Learning and Educational Technology Research Lab (LET) https://www.oulu.fi/let/ at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, University of Oulu, Finland. The LET is led by Prof. Sanna Järvelä and its research is pioneering in research on regulation in individual and collaborative learning in technology enhanced contexts.

About the job

The project focuses on studying regulation in collaborative learning context. Regulation in learning is important because of an increased demand in specialized human skills and competences for tackling complex problems in groups and across globally distributed groups. Despite the widely acknowledged role of regulation in effective collaborative learning, little progress has been made to provide regulation support to the learners. We introduce a novel concept of trigger events, which are those challenging events that may inhibit collaboration and will, therefore, require regulation of cognition, motivation, and emotion within the group. The project will collect multimodal collaborative learning process data to understand and detect those “unobservable” trigger events in order to develop adaptive support (e.g. AI) and teacher interventions for better collaborative learning, on-line teams and hybrid education. Data collection will be at the LeaF research infrastructure (https://www.oulu.fi/leaf-eng/) with multiple data channels: background information, situated measures, 360 degrees video, audio, physiological measures, and stimulated recall interviews. In multidisciplinary collaboration we will plan the analytical methods and machine learning models for identifying patterns of cognition, motivation, and emotion regulation in collaborative learning and matching them to challenges in CL situations.

Your main duties are:

  • You will work to analyse collaborative learning process data and contribute to theoretical and empirical progress in research on socially shared regulation in learning.
  • You will collaborate to work on the multimodal data analysis using innovative methods and research results dissemination (e.g., publications, conference presentations)..
  • You will engage with LET research lab and international collaborators to work towards hybrid intelligence, combining the power of human and artificial intelligence to empower learning, especially socially shared regulation in learning.

Who are you?

We expect from you: 

  • You are highly motivated with a doctoral degree in learning sciences, computer sciences, educational technology, data sciences, learning analytics or a related subject.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written, which are needed to work on this interdisciplinary project

We also appreciate

  • Experience with self-regulated learning theory, AI machine learning modelling, physiological data analysis, multimodal data and analytics, interdisciplinary research collaboration.

Salary

The position is fixed-term starting as soon as possible and ending 31.12.2025.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).  

A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
