We are now seeking

a Doctoral Researcher or a Postdoctoral Researcher

to work for the research project "AI-assisted sundown syndrome detection in the Arctic region" led by Academy Professor Guoying Zhao in the Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis Research Unit, CMVS, to work on the development and implementation of algorithms for Multimodal signals (e.g., videos/images and physiological signals like EEG, ECG, GSR, etc.).

About CMVS

CMVS provides an inspiring and international research environment. CMVS is renowned worldwide for its scientific breakthroughs in machine vision and signal analysis. Many of its results, including the Local Binary Pattern, face analysis, and geometric camera calibration methodologies, are highly cited and have been adopted for different types of problems and applications around the world. The unit is internationally attractive, with one visiting FiDiPro Professor, one Fellow, several visiting Scholars, and an extensive international Collaboration network, enabling many joint publications in leading forums. The main research interests of CMVS are in computer vision and machine learning, affective computing, Multimodal image and signal analysis, low-energy computing, and applications in affective human-computer interaction, biometrics, augmented reality, and biomedicine. In Physiological signal analysis, basic, applied, and translational research in biomedical engineering is carried out to tackle critical challenges of next-generation personalized medicine and wellness solutions. The Research Unit is globally highly ranked in its field, with research activities based on international collaborations. The partners of CMVS include three Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Computing Technology, Psychology, and Automation), the National University of Singapore, Stanford University (USA), University of Georgia (USA), Imperial College London (UK), Czech Technical University (Prague), University of Maryland (USA), Idiap Research Institute (Switzerland), and EPFL (Switzerland).

Open position for a doctoral student

The successful applicant would work in the field of computer vision and machine learning, carrying out the following tasks:

  • study the courses related to the subject field (for doctoral studies)
  • collect, annotate, and process multi-modal data with group members
  • implement different methods and develop new algorithms for emotion and abnormal behavior recognition from multimodal data
  • analyze the experimental results, be able to find out the problems, and adjust to new solutions
  • collaborate with other team members working on the same project or the same subject
  • write research papers and technical reports.

Qualification requirements for a doctoral student

We expect a Doctoral Researcher position.

  • a Master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, or a related area
  • previous experience and publications on computer vision, bio-signal processing, human-computer interaction, machine learning algorithm design, or a related area will be a plus
  • good knowledge of spoken and written English is required
  • strong Mathematical and programming skills with C/C++/Matlab/python are respected.

Open position for a Postdoctoral researcher

The successful applicant would work in the field of computer vision and machine learning, carrying out the following tasks:

  • develop new algorithms and methods for emotion and abnormal behavior recognition from Multimodal data
  • participate in multi-modal data collection, annotation, and processing
  • analyze the experimental results, be able to find out the problems, and adjust to new solutions
  • collaborate with other team members working on the same projects or the same subject
  • write research papers and technical reports
  • help the supervisor guide junior researchers and manage projects.

Qualification requirements for a post-doctoral researcher

We expect for the Postdoctoral Researcher position:

  • a doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, Neuroscience, or a related area. The degree must have been received no more than ten years ago.
  • good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • strong mathematical and programming skills with C/C++/Matlab/python are seen as a Merit
  • expertise and a strong publication record on computer vision, advanced bio-signal processing, human-computer interaction, machine learning algorithm design, or a related area will be a plus.

Salary

The fixed-term positions are two years for the doctoral student or one year for the postdoctoral researcher. The expected starting time for the work is March 2023 or as soon as possible. A trial period of 6 months is applied to positions.

The selected doctoral researcher's salary will follow the Finnish Universities' salary system (for teaching and research personnel): levels 02-04. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx—2400-2500€ per month.

The salary of the selected postdoctoral researcher will follow the Finnish Universities' salary system (for teaching and research personnel): levels 05-06. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx—3500-3800€ per month.
