The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
CWC and 6G Flagship are looking for talented researchers to fill
several Doctoral Researcher positions in the area of Local 6G Networks.
The Center for Wireless Communications (CWC) is recognized as one of the world’s leading and most active research centers in wireless technologies. CWC is at the heart of the University of Oulu’s strategic focus area, “Digitalization and Smart Society,” and features the 6G Flagship program, which is the world’s first major 6G research program running from 2018 to 2028. We are already a team of more than 400 researchers from 50+ countries. These positions fall within Wireless Connectivity in 6G Flagship's research agenda.
As a Doctoral Researcher, you will carry out cutting-edge research on predefined subjects as a team member. You will disseminate research results through scientific publications, conference presentations, and project deliverables. You may also assist in the supervision of Master’s students.
On the path toward 6G, networks are becoming ubiquitous, where local specialized services with various connectivity mechanisms are becoming increasingly popular, and service-driven architectures are becoming dominant. In that context, the concept of local connectivity emerges as a means to allow communities, local operators, property owners, or local commercial or individual customers to roll out their infrastructure to control connectivity over a well-defined area. This concept, termed Local 6G Networks, is foreseen to be one of the key differentiators of future 6G systems.
These positions are part of a research project investigating exciting research directions addressing various aspects of developing a Local 6G Network. For example, this includes security, resilience, spectrum aspects, and integration with other cellular and non-cellular networks. The goal is to address the challenges of delivering 6G connectivity in local area use cases where the conventional coverage/capacity-driven deployment paradigm does not fit, such as high-throughput/high-reliability connectivity in an industrial production facility.
As a doctoral researcher focusing on wireless connectivity for local 6G networks, you will investigate new deployments and architectures for local 6G networks that involve reflective surfaces, propose new data-driven strategies for controlling the local propagation environment, investigate and address the resulting security and privacy considerations, and develop new orchestration and coordination strategies to optimize the network resource utilization while meeting the challenging demands of future 6G systems. You will be part of a multidisciplinary research group and work closely with the project’s international partner(s).
To qualify as Doctoral Researcher, you must possess:

The contracts are full-time and fixed-term for four (4) years starting on 15th January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of six (6) months applies. The salary will be based on levels 2–4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approximately 2500-2600 € per month (before taxes), depending on the merits, experience, and qualifications. The Collective Agreement for Finnish Universities determines the terms of employment.
Interested? If yes, please apply by the 19th of November, 2023 (23:59 Finnish time). Applications must include the following required attachments in PDF format:
Only applications containing all the necessary attachments and submitted through the electronic application form will be considered. Top applicants will be invited to an on-site or remote interview.
