We are now looking for

University Teacher

to join us in the Research Unit for Languages and Literature, English, for a fixed-term position August 1, 2025 - December 31, 2026. The reason for the fixed-term employment is that this is a substitute position.

About the position

The university teacher will teach at basic, intermediate, and advance levels of English, on courses relating to the literatures, cultures and media of the Anglophone world. For example, during the academic year 2025-2026 the appointee will be expected to teach the following courses: Introduction to Literature in English, Researching Literature and Culture, Introduction to Anglophone Cultures, Bachelor’s Seminar and Thesis as well as two elective courses in their research field. Some of the courses will involve co-teaching. Additionally, the appointee will supervise and examine academic theses.

Who are you?

In order to succeed in the position, we expect you to have completed a master of arts degree in English Language and Literature by the time of the application deadline. Good teaching skills are required for the position. We appreciate proficiency in Finnish. The assessment of the merits of the applicants will pay particular attention to the following: experience in teaching university level courses on anglophone literature and culture, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials and provide teaching in a variety of ways, and scholarly publications.

Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 4–5 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3200–3900 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

    • Teaching philosophy, teaching strategies, and methods
    • Teacher’s self-reflection on their own teaching style
    • A description of oneself as a teacher and an implementer of educational work
    • Practical experience in teaching and efforts to improve teaching
    • Description of educational material (curricula, handouts, assignments, workbooks)
    • Professional development as a teacher
    • Evaluation of teaching (student evaluations, peer evaluations, awards, and assessed test lectures)
    • Plans for future directions of teaching in the discipline concerned
  • Copies of certificates for degrees completed
