The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for a
Doctoral Researcher
in Mechanical Engineering (Hydrogen Combustion and Advanced Engine Simulation) to join us in the Materials and Mechanical Engineering Research Unit (MME) at the Faculty of Technology.
About us
The Materials and Mechanical Engineering (MME) Research Unit is one of the key units at the University of Oulu, contributing to groundbreaking advancements in engineering research. The research unit houses automotive and mobile machinery engineering, machine design, materials engineering, and production engineering expertise.
The selected doctoral researcher will join the Machine and Vehicle Design (MVD) research group. This group leads the way in the sustainable application of digitalization for industrial transformation, focusing strongly on zero-emission technology and high-performance system design for future mobility solutions.
About the Position
We seek a highly motivated doctoral researcher to contribute to a cutting-edge research project focusing on hydrogen combustion and advanced engine simulation technologies. The position involves conducting 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, designing advanced combustion systems, and exploring innovative solutions for engine thermal stress mitigation and knock suppression.
The research spans multiple topics addressing fundamental and applied challenges, including:
- Hydrogen combustion in argon-based environments using advanced CFD tools like OpenFOAM and Converge.
- Thermal stress and knock mitigation strategies for high-performance engines.
- Gas-path control and argon close-loop system design for optimal engine operation and efficiency.
The position is funded by a multi-disciplinary project collaborating with leading academic and industrial partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced 3D CFD simulations of hydrogen/oxygen jets and combustion in argon-atmosphere experiments (CVC and RCM setups).
- Develop and validate simulation frameworks for closed-cycle engine modeling, focusing on cold spray and combustion scenarios (1D model in GT-Power).
- Collaborate on thermal management strategies and apply knock mitigation methods to engine designs.
- Contribute to the development and control of gas-path and argon close-loop systems for optimal temperature, pressure, and species monitoring.
- Validate simulation models against experimental data and optimize combustion settings and hardware designs.
- Disseminate research findings through publications and presentations.
Qualification Requirements
- A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, energy engineering, or a related field, completed within the last five years.
- Strong knowledge of combustion processes, CFD modeling, and thermal management.
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as OpenFOAM, Converge, GT-Power, or similar software.
- Excellent analytical skills and experience with system-level modeling and optimization.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Assessment Criteria
The candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications, prior research experience, and potential for doctoral-level work. Experience in the following areas will be considered an advantage:
- Hydrogen combustion and thermal stress modeling.
- CFD tool development or customization.
- Experimental validation of simulation models.
- Knowledge of system-level control and optimization.
- Familiarity with engine design and operation.
