Postdoctoral Researcher or Senior Research Fellow in Data science

to join us in Hybrid Intelligence (HI) Research Programme at the University of Oulu (Finland).

The University has recently launched a new multi-faculty strategic research program, “Hybrid Intelligence: Human-AI Co-evolution and Learning in Multi-realities.” HI stands on the fundamental research on emotion AI, learning processes, and perception engineering for AI-based solutions, e.g., in education and nursing. HI research combines the strengths of humans and machines, emphasizing mutual understanding and learning from each other in their co-evolution. We propose to build the idea of a metaverse by combining our physical and virtual realities towards a multi-reality. The programme focuses on international top-level collaborative and multidisciplinary research, supported by LeaF, a unique learning and interaction research infrastructure. HI aspires to scientific leadership in solving global challenges by facilitating human-human and human-technology interaction, understanding and collaboration for the human capital behind AI. With its international networks HI will pave the way towards breakthroughs in how humans and machines interact and understand and learn from each other. HI will recruit new talented international researchers to bolster scientific profiles at the University of Oulu and initiate new collaborations with companies.

About the job

The ideal candidate will possess specialized expertise in data science. Applicants are expected to have an internationally recognized track record of multidisciplinary research. This should include publications in journals of a high standard. Additionally, research efforts aimed at leveraging AI for the advancement of open science are highly valued.

The position is placed in the Faculty of Psychology and Education, but as a Data Scientist, you will be an integral part of the LeaF research infrastructure, collaborating closely with researchers in the field of Hybrid Intelligence. Your role will involve contributing skills in statistical analysis, machine learning, multimodal data analytics, database management, and other relevant skills to research focused on human-AI collaboration. Understanding of human sciences research and experience of multidisciplinary research collaborations are essential. Prior experience in partnering with corporations and industries will be considered a significant asset.

Key Responsibilities

One of your primary responsibilities will be to establish Data Forum within LeaF research infrastructure, in partnership with the Hybrid Intelligence research programme. The Data Forum aims to facilitate new research initiatives and foster discussions in following research themes: Data and algorithm assisted AI, understanding humans in AI interaction, extending human mind in multi-realities, emerging sustainable effects on the quality of life, and the practical applications of Hybrid Intelligence.

Qualifications

Applicant should hold a doctoral degree in Computer science, Statistics or Information systems, with a specific focus on human sciences, or a doctoral degree in a closely related field with demonstrable research proficiency in human AI and data. We also expect your active contribution to other focus areas within the Oulu University's Hybrid Intelligence profiling area, as well as a commitment to collaborative work with other scholars engaged in Hybrid Intelligence.

Who are you?

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • Doctoral degree in the applicable research field. The doctoral degree of the postdoctoral researcher must be obtained no more than 10 years ago.
  • Computer and data analyst skills (for example collect and process multimodal data and create algorithms).
  • Experienced in data visualization, statistical data analysis and big data.
  • Be familiar with the EU data act You must demonstrate evidence of scientific research work and relevant teaching skills You must have the ability to lead research and experience in acquiring external research funding.
  • We also expect you to have sufficient and relevant experience in international scientific work and evidence of international cooperation.

Because this is a multidisciplinary position, we value demonstrated experience in multidisciplinary approaches to research You have excellent written and interpersonal communication skills

Salary

The position is a five-year fixed-term contract starting 1.1.2024 or as agreed.

The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. The salary of the senior researcher fellow will be based on levels 6-7 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € for the postdoctoral researcher, and 4000-5500 € for the senior research fellow per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.
