Faculty of Technology, Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now looking for a

Doctoral researcher

with a contract starting on 01.07.2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Position has a four year funding. The doctoral researcher will join the Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering Research Group under the supervision of Senior Research Fellow, Docent/Dr. Elisangela Heiderscheidt and Assistant Professor Pekka Rossi. The group is part of the Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering research unit at the Faculty of Technology. The research unit is at the forefront of water research in Finland and Europe and has just been awarded the flagship project “Digital Waters” by the Research Council of Finland.

About the job

You will work on research tasks involved in the project “Sanitation systems as sources of environmental contamination in cold conditions: The case of micropollutants load and their role in source identification (SanMic)”. The project aims to generate critically needed information on the occurrence of micropollutants in sewage water, wastewater treatment plant effluents and the receiving environment. The goal is to provide information that will enable wastewater utilities to prepare for changes in monitoring and treatment requirements due to alterations in EU regulations. Implementation of the research will be done in close collaboration with e.g., wastewater utilities, municipalities, decision makers and regulators assuring fast dissemination and uptake of the results.

Furthermore, the project will investigate the possibility of using the occurrence of sewage-derived micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems (e.g., lakes, etc.) as indicators for contaminant source identification in combination with other parameters such as the isotopic composition of nitrate and water molecules.

Involved tasks will include e.g., water, wastewater and other environmental matrices sampling and analysis, map development and data analysis in GIS-based tools, etc. Contaminant transport modelling might also be included as a project activity.
