We are now looking for

a Postdoctoral Researcher

to join us in the Research unit at the Faculty of ITEE, CMVS research center.
The Center for Machine Vision and Signal Analysis (CMVS) is a creative, open, and internationally
attractive research center, combining the expertise of the University of Oulu computer vision and
biosignal analysis scientists. Through expertise spanning decades and extensive international
collaboration, CMVS continues to conduct internationally acknowledged work on the cutting edge of its research areas.

Our publications are in top-tier conferences and journals, including CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, AAAI, TPAMI, IJCV, TIP, etc. We will ensure you produce high-quality research outcomes with the support of our international, supportive, and open-minded team.

About the job
The position is part of the Hybrid Intelligence: Human-AI Co-evolution and Learning in Multi-realities (HI) profiling research program at the University of Oulu, funded by the Academy of Finland in the Profi7 initiative. Your role will involve developing data processing and computing technology to help humans and machines understand each other in the following ways:

  • By including machine learning methods for interpreting human emotions, intentions, preferences, and decision-making, it analyses facial expressions, body behaviors, and physiological signals
  • Endowing machines with capabilities for expressing emotions through advanced interactive behavior synthesis algorithms
  • Helping humans to understand machines by visualizing and explaining the internal states and status of data, algorithms, and models through multi-modality for mixed-reality interfaces.
  • Contribute to HI research publications.
  • Engage in writing and submitting applications for research funding.
  • Collaborate in service (teaching, event, workshop/tutorial, etc.) to the HI program, faculty, and university.
  • Actively participate in HI program activities and development.
  • You will conduct research within a team, manage project-related tasks, and disseminate research findings in leading international scientific journals.

Who are you?

We expect from you:

  • For a postdoctoral researcher, a doctoral degree in computer science or in a relevant field that was awarded not more than ten years ago.
  • Capacity to collaborate in research and research dissemination activities.
  • A strong motivation towards ground-breaking/high-quality research.
  • A transdisciplinary research orientation with demonstrated research experience or interest.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in English.
  • An international vision and an open mind are strongly recommended.
  • Experience with AI/deep learning algorithms and development is strongly preferred.

Salary

The positions are fixed term starting earliest 01.06.2024, counting four years from the starting day.

The salary will be based on levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting gross salary will be approx. 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).


A trial period of 6 months is applied for the position.

  • Certificates/Diplomas: Scanned copy of the original doctoral degree certificate. Doctoral
    candidates at the defending stage (defending must take place in spring 2024) may also apply and must provide the main supervisor’s statement about their progress. The employment of a post-doctoral position may be started only after graduation of a doctoral degree.
