Research technician

to join Oulanka research station for a permanent position.

Oulanka research station is a regional unit of the University of Oulu and its main roles are to facilitate high-level research and university teaching. The station is situated in the middle of Oulanka national park, a region very rich in spectacular nature sites – a rare opportunity to work in the middle of most beautiful nature! Although Oulanka has a focus and strong history on natural sciences and environmental engineering, the station is open to all kinds of research, also multidisciplinary and arts.

About the job

  • In the position of research technician you would contribute mainly to facilitating field research activities at Oulanka with some additional related field work in Greenland. There would be a strong focus on maintenance, installation, calibration of ICOS type eddy-covariance gas exchange equipment, energy balance measurement instruments, the accompanying sensors, loggers, and other equipment.
  • You would also do data mining and data refining from the above types of instruments

Who are you?

In order to succeed and enjoy the position, we expect from you:

  • The skills and mindset that enable field work around the year in remote conditions.
  • An applicable higher education degree
  • Strong written and spoken skills in English are required as the work involves close collaboration with international research groups.
  • A background in working with environmental sensors, loggers, including their programming, is seen as an advantage, in particular if it includes experience with micrometeorological instrumentation.
  • Experience of doing field work in challenging conditions is seen as a strong benefit as is experience of working with long-term natural experiments.
  • Excellent IT skills, good communication skills
  • Readiness to spend up to 3-4 weeks per year in Greenland, doing fieldwork

We also appreciate

  • Finnish language skills
  • The ability to adapt to sometimes quickly changing timetables and to a dynamic nature of workflow is seen as an advantage.

Salary

The position is permanent starting from 22.04.2024 (or as agreed).

The salary will be based on the level 7 of the demand level chart for other expert and support staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2700-3000 EUR per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
