The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.
We are now looking for
to join us in the Microelectronics Research Unit at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The Microelectronics Research Unit (MIC) at the University of Oulu is a key player in materials research for electronics, sensors, and actuators. Our computational electronic materials team focuses on the computational studies of nanoscale components and materials. At the same time, the unit has vast experience in experimental research on electronics, telecommunications, and energy harvesting devices.
A future driven by artificial intelligence (AI)--enhanced systems are expected to make our lives easier, safer, or more entertaining. Yet, achieving these expectations in the realm of smart and interconnected devices (internet of things, 6G wireless communication, smart health monitoring, etc.) requires solving crucial challenges in the computation of AI models. Most importantly, computing these models on classical processors requires excessive computing power.
In the recently funded project "Ferroelectric-enhanced analog accelerators for robust, ultra-low power edge intelligence," the aim is to investigate extremely energy-efficient neuromorphic computing, i.e., computing systems inspired by our brain, based on novel ferroelectric devices that can mimic biological computing mechanisms. To solve this challenge, this project combines the expertise of partners at the University of Oulu, Aalto University, and Tampere University to create a library of computing devices to be fabricated, modeled, and integrated into computer-aided design (CAD) tools used by system-on-chip (SoC) designers.
