Faculty of Technology, Materials and Mechanical Engineering

The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university, with about 3,600 employees who produce new knowledge based on high-standards research and provide research based education to build a more sustainable, smarter, and more humane world. The University of Oulu community has about 17,000 people in total. Our northern scientific community operates globally and creates conditions for the emergence of innovations.

We are now looking for

a Doctoral Researcher

to join our Industrial Doctorate Program in Materials and Mechanical Engineering Unit at the Faculty of Technology.

Materials and Mechanical Engineering includes four separate fields of research study: Microstructure and Mechanics (Materials Engineering), Performance of Steels (Materials Engineering), Failure mechanisms (Materials Engineering), Modelling and Production Engineering and Machine and Vehicle Design. We are aiming to be as a world leading research unit in the field of physical metallurgy of high-strength steels, with a focus on improving the efficiency and sustainability of modern machines, vehicles, and structures. We strive to provide innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges and to contribute to the development of modern structure and mobile machinery that are both environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions.

About the job

The Materials Engineering research team focuses on investigating and modeling the formation of surface defects in Ultra-High-Strength Steels (UHSS) and Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) in a modern minimill concept. This research is conducted in close collaboration with SSAB, a leading fossil-free steel manufacturer. The primary goal is to gain insights into the process and develop models that can accurately predict surface defects in UHSS and AHSS. The research will contribute to optimizing the production process and enhancing the quality of these steels. The experiments are carried out in SSAB Europe Oy Raahe mill (steel quality and process development) and University of Oulu (physical simulation and microstructural characterization).
