We are not looking for a 

Network Specialist

to join the 6G Test Center at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), which combines cutting-edge research and close cooperation with actors in the defense and security industry. You will work as a project researcher at the Linnanmaa campus of the University of Oulu as part of an international network and the NATO DIANA 6G Test Center, which is the first of its kind in the world.

Our ITEE-faculty is one of the world's leading scientific communities developing the ICT field. The 6G Test Center is an integral part of the 6GFlagship research program, which is the world's first 6G research, development and innovation ecosystem funded by the Academy of Finland and the University of Oulu. The 6G Test Center aims to be a leader in testing dual-use technologies. The goal is to develop next-generation network functionalities by combining 5G/6G and artificial intelligence technologies, enable testing of arctic and challenging environments in the most realistic possible operating environment, and create new market opportunities by supporting Finnish and international innovations in the NATO DIANA global network.

About the job

  • You will work as a project researcher at the 6G Test Center of the CWC-Networks and Systems unit as part of the NATO DIANA-network
  • Design and implement core network infrastructure and connections between different networks, such as tactical networks, public telephone networks and government networks.
  • Design, configuration and maintenance of network components.
  • Participate in testing and quality assurance tasks to ensure the compatibility of new features and services for critical communication needs.
  • Design and implement network components, as well as monitor and maintain network operations, solve problems and optimize performance.
  • Design and implement security solutions, threat prevention and security architecture for core networks.
  • Develop network services, virtualize environments (NFV/SDN) and utilize network automation to streamline management processes.
  • Work closely with network providers, operators and NATO DIANA stakeholders.

What We Expect from You:

To succeed and enjoy the position, we expect you to have:

  • A relevant higher education degree (e.g., computer science, network engineering, or a related field).
  • Experience in core network design and maintenance (experience with 5G/6G technologies is an advantage).
  • Strong knowledge of IP networks, switches, routers, servers, and their virtualization environments.
  • Understanding of network security and the ability to design security solutions for critical communications.
  • Experience with Linux environments.

The position requires an approved security clearance.

Salary

The position is fixed-term, starting as soon as possible and lasting until 31 December 2026.

The salary for the project researcher will be based on the levels MV 7-8 of the demand level chart for other expert and support staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 3000-3500 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
